AISLS Preconference on Meghaduta and Messenger Poems in South Asia
On October 20, 2011, AISLS held a one day workshop on how Meghaduta and sandesa poetry in South Asian literary culture. It covered works in Sanskrit, Malayalam, Telugu, Sinhala and Tamil. A broad range of issues were considered, including form, genre, textual connections and reception history. Participants included Yigal Bronner, Stewart Gordon, Sivan Goren, V. Narayana Rao, Katarzyna Pazucha, Gautam Reddy, David Shulman, Gary Tubb and Katherine Young. The workshop was organized by Charles Hallisey. A workshop report is available.
2010 AISLS Forum at the Association for Asian Studies, Philadelphia
On Friday, 26 March, Liyanage Amarakeerthi, Senior Lecturer in the Sinhala Department at the University of Peradeniya, gave a talk on "Cultural Criticism in Contemporary Sri Lanka".

"Early Modernity" in Sri Lanka, South Asia and Southeast Asia
On October 22nd, 2009, AISLS sponsored a one-day conference at the University of Wisconsin--Madison on "early modernity" in Sri Lanka and the wider Indian Ocean and Asian regions. The conference featured six papers with substantial Sri Lanka material, presented by Charles Hallisey, Zoltan Biedermann, Alan Strathern, Alicia Schrikker, Sujit Sivasundaram and Patrick Peebles. The discussants -- Prachi Deshpande, Ramya Sreenivansan, Preeti Chopra, Anne Hansen, Penny Edwards and Tony Day -- were specialists on India and Southeast Asia. The conference was organized by John Rogers.

2009 AISLS Forum at the Association for Asian Studies, Chicago
On Friday 27 March, AISLS sponsored a roundtable discussion on Dennis McGilvray’s new book, Crucible of Conflict: Tamil and Muslim Society on the East Coast of Sri Lanka. Participants included Stephen Dale, Tudor Silva, Jonathan Spencer, Mark Whitaker, and Dennis McGilvray.

2008 Annual General Meeting

The 2008 AISLS annual general meeting was devoted to honoring four senior members of AISLS -- James Brow, John Ross Carter, Jim Gair, and Donald Smith. The event also served as reunion for the 1967 summer session where Gair taught Sinhala to Brow, Carter and Smith. Judy Brow and Sandra Carter also participated in that course.



South Asia Seen From the East: Lessons and Questions from Lansing’s "Perfect Order"
On October 16th 2008, AISLS sponsored a one-day conference at the University of Wisconsin--Madison considering insights for the study of South and Southeast from J. Stephen Lansing's book Perfect Order: Recognizing Complexity in Bali, which focuses on social organization, religious practices, and irrigation networks in Bali. Professor Lansing participated by videoconferencing from Bali. The conference was organized by Charles Hallisey and Deborah Winslow. Other participants included Kenneth George, Leedom Lefferts, Anne Hansen, John Rogers, Dennis McGilvray, Preeti Chopra and Anne Monius.

2008 AISLS Forum at the Association for Asian Studies, Atlanta

The AISLS forum at the annual meeting of the Association for Asian Studies featured a discussion of current events in Sri Lanka. Panelists included Barney Bate, Neloufer de Mel, Jeanne Marecek and Mark Whitaker.

The AISLS sponsored a panel discussion on contemporary Sri Lankan fiction in English. The discussion was led by
Carmen Wickramagamage (University of Peradeniya).

2006 Conference on South Asia

The 2006 Annual Conference on South Asia had a special emphasis on Sri Lanka, and its program included over 50 academic
presentations concerning the island. The AISLS sponsored a workshop on the films of Prasana Vithanage and a slideshow and
talk by Abby Robinson on photography studios and film-making in Sri Lanka. The AISLS also co-sponsored the keynote address
by Gananath Obeyesekere.
