This online unit seeks to address a number of issues of historical and contemporary relevance through an examination of the tea industry in Sri Lanka. General background is provided for instructors and students, with an emphasis on a visual approach through the use of colonial-era photographs and postcards.

The curricular approaches provided do not presume any familiarity with tea, nor with Sri Lanka. Each “mini-module” section included contains background information, visuals, activities and resources. The specialized sections provide relevant material and resources for courses addressing world history, environmental studies, labor/immigration and globalization. Specific attention to tea in Sri Lanka provides a useful case study to address the range of these issues.
