Dispersed Sri Lankan Heritage: Ways of Accessing, Seeing and Working with Collections

Much material for the study of Sri Lanka’s past is dispersed around the world. What are the practicalities of accessing collections and conducting research in a field with such challenging conditions? May the broadening of knowledge about collections help decolonize and reconfigure museums and archives, and help to understand factors influencing ways material has been collected, organized and researched? This series of three seminars focuses on specific collections to examine the character of the material and strategies in accessing and studying Sri Lanka-related artefacts. Expert speakers discuss approaches for interpreting them in their current contexts.

April 29: John Falconer (Former Curator, British Library). Photographs from Sri Lanka in the British Library and other Selected Collections.

May 6: Sushma Jansari (Curator, British Museum). The Hugh Nevill Collection in the British Museum. Discussion with Janice Leoshko.

May 13: Alicia Schrikker (Leiden University). Provenance Research into Colonial Collections — the Rijksmuseum. Discussion with Zoltán Biedermann.
