ABOUT BENITA STAMBLER

Benita Stambler has a Master of Arts in Teaching Asian Studies and a doctorate in education. She first became interested in Sri Lanka when identifying and cataloguing a collection of more than 300 photos taken in Ceylon in the late nineteenth century. She then organized an exhibition of Ceylon photos at the Ringling Museum of Art, the State art museum of Florida. She received a grant from AISLS to create a guide providing information for locating photographs of colonial Ceylon, which is now on the organization’s website. Since then, she has published an article about Ceylon photographs for the Trans-Asia Photography Review. She co-authored an article about photographs of Ceylon incorporated into American circus postersforEarly Popular Visual Culture.Her chapter on photographs and print media of Ceylon will be included in a forthcoming book on cultural exchange between Europe and Asia.
