AISLS HOLDS AAS FORUM ON “A SRI LANKAN SUFI COMMUNITY IN PHILADELPHIA: THE BAWA MUHAIYADDEEN FELLOWSHIP”

On March 28, 2014, AISLS held a forum at the Annual Meeting of the Association for Asian Studies in Philadelphia.  The topic was the Bawa Muhaiyaddeen Fellowship, a transnational Sufi order established in Philadelphia in 1971. The Fellowship is based on the teachings of Muhammad Raheem Bawa Muhaiyaddeen (d. 1986), a Sufi saint from Sri Lanka, whose final resting place is in a shrine outside of Philadelphia. This forum placed Bawa Muhaiyaddeen in the context of South Asian Sufism and examine his legacy in Sri Lanka and in North America. The presenters were Frank Korom (Religion, Boston University), Dennis McGilvrary (Anthropology, University of Colorado–Boulder) and Shobana Xavier (Religious Studies, Wilfrid Laurier University).  The forum was organized by Daniel Bass.
