CFP: GRADUATE STUDENT WORKSHOP (29 MARCH 2019 DEADLINE)

American Institute for Sri Lankan Studies

CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS

GRADUATE STUDENT WORKSHOP ON RESEARCH ON SRI LANKA

Dissertation Writing Workshop

Thursday, October 17, 2019

Madison, WI

AISLSwill hold a small afternoon workshop for 4 or 5 graduate students in Sri Lankan studies in Madison, Wisconsin, on Thursday afternoon, October 17, 2019.  This is also the first day of the 2019 Annual Conference on South Asia. The workshop is designed to provide support and feedback to writing-up graduate students, particularly those who may not have committee members specializing on Sri Lanka.

Selected students will pre-circulate a draft of a dissertation chapter or segement (around 25 pages), along with a tentative table of contents and short summary of the dissertation project, and questions and concerns about the project and the chapter for the group to discuss. Two to three faculty will be part of the session to provide detailed comments and feedback on the chapters. All participating students will be expected read each other’s work and also provide feedback. The format will thus be focused around writing, themes, theory and argument. AISLS envisions this workshop to contribute to graduate training and the strengthening of research on Sri Lanka.

AISLS can provide limited support for travel and lodging. In order to be eligible for such support, applicants must be (or become) members of AISLS prior to the workshop. Note that the panels at the Annual Conference on South Asia (18—19 October) have a substantial number of papers on Sri Lanka, and that AISLS will hold its Annual General Meeting and Reception on the evening of 19 October.

To apply for this session, please send the following materials for review: 1) 1-2 page cover letter with a brief statement of how far along you are in your graduate studies, a short description of your project, brief outline of your planned dissertation, and why you would like to participate in the workshop  and 2) a c.v.. Applications should be sent in an email attachment to John Rogers (AISLS Executive Director,us.director.aisls@gmail.com) by Friday, March  29th. Questions about the scope of the session should be directed to the AISLS President, Sharika Thiranagama, at sharikat@stanford.edu
